U.S. banks rally last-minute on Europe hope

Shares of top U.S. banks rallied with the broader market in the final hour of trading Tuesday as worries over Europe’s debt crisis eased following a report that E.U. ministers agreed to do more to shore up their financial system.
Financial stocks proved volatile Tuesday: First battered by European banks’ profit warnings, boosted by comments to Congress from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke only to backslide back toward session lows later in the day. Then, with less than an hour in the trading session, the financial sector rallied from a loss to close up as the strongest sector in the S&P 500.
