Stocks ended higher Wednesday on hopes Europe is closer to getting its house in order with a plan to recapitalize its banks and an imminent agreement on a sweeping bailout plan. The developments in the euro zone also fueled hopes for more demand for commodities such as oil and copper, and boosted gold prices.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA ended the day up 102.55 points, or 0.9%, to 11,518.85. The blue-chip index traded in the black for the year earlier, but a last-minute bout of selling took yearly losses to 0.5%.
