U.S. Stocks fall on some of year's lightest trading

U.S. markets closed lower on some of the lightest trading of both the month and year Monday. Nasdaq composite volume on Monday was the thinnest of the year with 1.38 billion shares exchanging hands. The average daily composite volume for the Nasdaq is 1.88 billion shares for the month and 2.03 billion for the year. In NYSE composite volume, 3.04 billion shares traded hands for the fourth-lightest day of trading this year. Average NYSE daily composite volume is 4.05 billion shares for the month and 4.35 billion for the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.61%finished 0.6% lower, with the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP -0.80% down 0.8% and the S&P 500 Index SPX -0.96% nearly 1% lower
